A PRECISION DECISION: Omega’s New Vertical Machining Center

Released on 1/21/10

Omega Design recently acquired a new, high-performance, 4-axis Vertical Machining Center (VMC) from Haas Automation, Inc. Omega will use this new capability to augment its already excellent supply chain and in-house capabilities to help meet the ever-increasing demands from its customers for higher machine performance, lower cost and faster response. This latest acquisition is part of a broader roadmap for Omega’s future.

Omega acquires a new Vertical Machining Center.

Omega is pushing further into increased machine precision in order for its machines to do more and do it faster than ever before. Traditionally, Omega has produced industry leading, high-quality packaging equipment by combining its engineering expertise, skilled craftsmanship and strategic relationships with select vendors. Time and again, this formula has proven successful for meeting or exceeding the needs of end users and their packaging lines. But tougher requirements mean more capable machines and Omega has succeeded in meeting these needs by leveraging higher levels of precision in select applications, a trend it views as permanent and growing. Having a closer link between the design and manufacture of critical parts will lead to more innovation, reduce customer lead times, and help manage costs.

Omega recognized this need several years ago and has continued to grow the precision content of its unscramblers so that today’s new ‘XL’-family of state-of-the-art rotary pocket unscramblers can:

  • unscramble containers at higher speeds in smaller footprints
  • print, verify (or reject) containers at higher speeds
  • can insert bigger canister desiccants into smaller container openings
  • can take full advantage of servo-controlled applications
  • are quieter and take up less floor space

The new Vertical Machining Center complements the need to build advanced machinery perfectly and is considered an essential, strategic acquisition. It follows the recent acquisition of a ‘FaroArm Platinum’ portable CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) to verify part accuracy, especially effective and efficient for high-precision parts using GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
